Aleph-Bet Coloring Book – History of Papercutting
The oldest surviving papercut was created in China in the 6th century. Examples of the art form appeared in Western Asia by the eighth or ninth century. Papercutting has been a Jewish art form since the time of the Middle Ages. During this period, most Judaica artists were not trained professionals; their art reflected their devotion to G-d.
By the 17th century, the art form was often used to create religious artifacts such as mizrachs, decorative plaques hung on the eastern wall in Jewish homes indicating the direction of prayer facing Jerusalem, and ketubot, or marriage contracts. Jewish papercuts also reflected religious or ritual occasions decorating homes on holidays and as memorials recalling the passing of loved ones.
Today, the art of Judaica papercutting is one of the many different forms of Jewish folk art, through which artists express their love of Jewish study by creating visual representations of words and ideas.
