Elissa Slotkin’s Haunted Career Fair: Please Bring a Résumé and a Fog Machine
Satirical commentary inspired by the October 2026 controversy. The haunted career fair and other fantasy scenes are invented.
Washington has finally found a way to make a job interview more stressful than explaining a six-month gap in your résumé: add a senator, a deterrence message, and an organ playing ominously inside Human Resources. The real story began at an October 13 University of Chicago event, where Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin spoke with Vox’s Astead Herndon. Discussing accountability for the Trump administration, she said she wanted potential recruits leaving school to reconsider whether working for it could bring problems. Her memorable conclusion: “I want that deterrence message sent.”
Republican critics, including Senator Mike Lee, interpreted that as intimidation aimed at prospective conservative staffers. Slotkin subsequently told CNN she meant accountability for illegal activity, rather than punishment for political disagreement. “You’re not breaking the law. No problem,” she said. That distinction matters. The controversy concerns prospective government employees. The witch chasing little Republican children belongs to the fictional coloring-book universe. The wording, however, practically arrived with its own thunderclap.
The Broom Has Entered the Chat
For a political coloring book, the episode supplies an irresistible comic setup: a grand statement, an ominous phrase, a furious argument over meaning, and a broomload of explanations. The cartoonist adds the witch hat. Washington supplies the atmosphere. A witch’s broom is an excellent vehicle for this story: it travels in circles, kicks up a tremendous cloud, and somehow leaves someone else to clean the floor. Even the cat is wondering whether the problem is the spell or the person who keeps explaining it. Somewhere in our imaginary Washington, the cat is now reviewing a revised recruitment slogan: “Exciting opportunities. Competitive benefits. Occasional thunder.” The cat pushes it off the desk.
